From Dreamscapes - Myth & Magic:
Fox spirits are adept shape-shifters. They are able to assume human form – a young girl, a beautiful woman, an old man. They are long-lived, and perhaps as a result become bored and seek entertainment among humans. The older and more powerful spirts often have multiple tails, with the oldest ones having nine-tails. They have a quixotic nature, sometimes using their talents to play tricks, and other times acting as faithful guardians or lovers.

In Japan, fox spirits are frequently associated with the god Inari. They are celestial guardians whose talents are used for benevolence towards the humans who worship Inari.

There are many stories of fox spirits assuming the form of a beautiful woman. At dusk they wait for the lone travelers along quiet lanes.

“Come with me,” she beckons with sweet voice and guile. Helpless in the face of otherworldly charms, the man follows, lured to the fox’s den which illusion has shaped to a fantastic palace filled with riches. When morning comes there is nothing but dirt and leaves and the bewildered traveler finds himself alone and lost.

The collection of tales “Chinese Ghost and Love Stories” by P’u Sung-Lin is filled with the escapades of fox spirits.

  • About Me

Stephanie Pui-Mun Law has been painting fantastic otherworlds from early childhood, though her art career did not begin until 1998 when she graduated from a program of Computer Science. After three years of programming for a software company by day and rushing home to paint into the midnight hours, she left the world of typed logic and numbers, for painted worlds of dreams and the fae. Her illustrations have been for various game and publishing clients, including Wizards of the Coast, HarperCollins, LUNA Books, Tachyon Books, White Wolf, Alderac Entertainment, and Green Ronin. She has authored and illustrated “Dreamscapes, Creating Magical Angel, Faery & Mermaid Worlds with Watercolor” (2008, North Light Books), a book on watercolor technique for fantasy, and a sequel to be released in 2010. She is also the creator of the Shadowscapes Tarot deck (Llewellyn Publishing, 2010).
